I’ve only done a moderate job of keeping in touch with many of the people I shared ATech classes with in college, but I’ve been working with some software that I thought I’d share with people.
If you’ve got a great job in the field and are enjoying it, then don’t worry about this. However, if you’ve got all your advanced audio knowledge and haven’t figured out how to get paid for it yet, I thought I’d share an alternative career path that wasn’t touched on while I was in ATech.
Biamp is a company that makes digital audio products. Their Audia and Nexia lines are both digital audio processors that take a configurable series of inputs and outputs, and then give you a big virtual sandbox to play in and do anything you want with it. There are tons of filters, mixers, dynamic processers, delays, meters, tone generators, and more. You can do almost anything with these systems. They are most commonly used for conference room and theater applications to do audio processing “in the box”
The reason I thought people would find this useful is that Biamp releases their software for free. You can download the Audia and Nexia design programs from their website and play with them. You can explore different configurations and play in the sandbox with no financial investment. If you do, and want to see some examples, email me and I’ll send you a few files you can play with.
Like I said, this is a completely different career path than what we thought we were getting into when we took ATech classes, but if you’re working in retail or something, and really want to get back into the Audio side of things, this might be a good way to start.
